Women's and Gender Studies

WGST Mission Statement

The mission of the Women’s and Gender Studies (WGST) program is to provide students comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and multidisciplinary knowledge of women and gender grounded in feminist thought and reflective of cross-cultural and global perspectives. Informed by theories of the social construction of gender and standpoint epistemology, WGST courses highlight social transformation and social justice. Students study such issues as work, health, sexuality, obstacles to gender equality, leadership, and activism. They also investigate issues of difference, and the intersection of gender and other forms of social identity such as race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, nationality, age, and ability. These courses also develop students’ ability to think logically, critically, and creatively; make sound ethical decisions; and communicate effectively.

WGST courses emphasize interactive learning processes to challenge students to consider new ways of thinking about women and gender and to inspire them to apply the knowledge acquired to their personal and professional lives. The graduate certificate program provides specialized knowledge and training for students seeking expertise in women’s and gender studies.

We welcome students of all genders, races, ethnicities, classes, abilities, ages, religions, and sexualities to enroll in our courses and experience our unique offerings.
