Women's and Gender Studies

Message from the Director

Welcome to the Women’s and Gender Studies Program at MTSU. We offer an 18-hour interdisciplinary undergraduate minor and an 18-hour Graduate Certificate with courses focusing on women, the social construction of gender, and sexualities. These programs of study are designed to complement primary areas of study by deepening awareness of feminist theories and methods.  Our courses include a focus on the social construction of gender, masculinities, LGBTQ issues, social justice, sexual and gender violence, diverse identities, and reproductive and sexual health. Across the curriculum departmental and program courses emphasize intersectionality, cultural and global diversity, and women’s diverse voices and experiences.  Departmental electives taught by our affiliated faculty challenge students to apply a gender and feminist lens to various contexts, making students well-rounded critical thinkers in various disciplinary approaches.

We house a library of more than 1000 volumes in the field of Women’s and Gender Studies, available for check out by MTSU students, faculty, and staff. Additionally, we plan and host a biennial international conference in Women’s and Gender Studies, Creating Global Change, assist with National Women’s History Month efforts, and co-sponsor events with many programs and offices on campus. We provide an annual Outstanding Women’s and Gender Studies Minor scholarship and present the Ayne Cantrell Award to a faculty member for outstanding service to the Women’s and Gender Studies Program.

Students seeking to continue their studies after graduation should consider the WGST Graduate Certificate to enhance employment preparedness in cultural diversity as well as to complement and strengthen M.A. and Ph.D. degrees across disciplines.
